“Private sufficiency, public luxury”: an exploration of consumer clothing circularity

Dr. Lynn I. Wilson FRSA

Global consumption has led to a temperature rise of over 1.5 degrees Celsius (IPCC, 2018): the outcome of global consumption is post-consumption waste, landfilled and incinerated, “To live is to pollute. We all consume. We all generate waste” (Alexander, 1993: 175). Since the 1960s, consumption has been addressed as problematic.

Above is the start to the introduction of the White Paper.

MONBIOT’S CONCEPT OF “PRIVATE SUFFICIENCY, PUBLIC LUXURY” CONCEPT is introduced with definitions of clothing sufficiency and public clothing luxury. The paper goes on to introduce the CIRCULAR ECONOMY WARDROBE (CEW) as the solution.
